RVing 101: What is a teardrop camper?

August 22, 2009

You gotta love the teardrop camper trailer! I sure do…they are just so cute. Okay, it’s a lot more than just cute…it is a comfortable, convenient, and compact trailer camper. It got its name from the streamlined “teardrop” shape.

Built for the first time in the early 1930’s there is room for two people to sleep comfortably inside and there is an area for cooking outside under the rear hatch. Many are equipped to have a screened room added for outside enjoyment.

A typical teardrop is 4′ wide, 4′ high, and 8′-10′ long. There are some as big as 6-1/2′ wide, 5′ high, and nearly 12′ long. While the larger types often have wheels inside the body, most, and original, have the wheels & tires outside the body covered by fenders.

One of the absolute best features of the teardrop trailer is the tow ability. It can be towed by just about anything, including: Corvettes, mini-vans, SUV’s, pickups, Harley-Davidsons and Honda Goldwings! If you can drive it, you can probably tow a teardrop!

You can do more than camp in a teardrop camper…you can tailgate! Custom made teardrop tailgaters are the latest greatest thing on two wheels. Now this would help any team win! Go BROWNS!!
